BFA in painting and minor in Art History from Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts.
Art and science have always been entwined in my life. The generosity of nature is a prominent theme in my work and I draw inspiration from the systematic and repetitive expression found in the natural world. I am intrigued by the interplay between people and the natural world on both the conscious and subconscious levels and the subjective response to patterns and themes. The use of plants in art has a long tradition, from the decorative abstraction of ancient Egypt and Greece, to curvilinear and brilliantly colored medieval manuscript illumination, to botanical art and the flat-patterned backgrounds of the post-Impressionists.
My current body of work is an exhaustive study of the dangerous beauty of Oriental bittersweet, Celastrus orbicularis, an invasive species of sinuous form. I enjoy the elemental nature of graphite and paper and the meditative slowness of the process in the gradual building of the image. Although my drawings are realistic, composition and abstraction play vital roles in the development of both positive and negative space, the end result a melding of classic botanical presentation and fine art.
